Hello, I created this blog because Melbourne is my city and I want people to see what a beautiful place it is. So come with me on a journey of discovery as we traverse the dining precincts, the culture, the laneways and hidden gems that make Melbourne marvellous.

Melbourne Cottages

Olde Worlde Grandeur
This pair of double storey cottages are a fine example of the many homes built in the inner city suburbs of Melbourne at the turn of the century. Built in the Victorian Italianate style, they feature the arched windows and extensive lacework reminiscent of the era and have been restored using heritge colours.
Below is a photo showing the ground floor windows.

They look like some really cozy, historic cottages. I wonder how big they are inside and what the interiors look like . . .

These are gorgeous examples, BFG. We have similar up here in Sydney but only a very few that are quite as grand. I have a friend in Melbourne who used to live in Albert Park. The houses around there are lovely, too.

Oh boy, do I like these! They are beautiful in every respect...the windows, those lacy railings; the door; the flora...what's not to like?

These are gorgeous! The lacy railing and details, and even the fence are fantastic! The flowering trees and shrubs are so lovely too!

The flowers with the delicate ironwork (and fence) make a beautiful picture. Are there other houses of that style that have survived in such great shape?

Leif - The ceilings would be 12' and the rooms (usually) 12' square.

Julie - Going back to the city from Bondi, I saw some lovely old houses in leafy streets in Woollhara. They were really nice.

Jacob - The old buildings had so much more style than today's ones, and there was so much more attention to detail.

Hilda - They exude that welcoming feel, they look so pretty.

Three Rivers - There are many, many old homes in Melbourne (and Victoria) that are still standing. Many years ago, they were just old houses, then they became known as "period" homes. (the price rose dramatically.):-)

I've seen many victorian iron balconies on australian blogs; I presume you have a lot around there and I love them!

Bergson - There is a lot of greenery.

JM - Yes, we have heaps and heaps of them. I love the old places and sometimes drive along certain streets just for this. People realised years ago that renovating and keeping all the period features (both inside and out) added a whole lot more value to the property than ripping them out and "modernising." Homes where this had happened, the new owners would put them back.
