Elephant and Wheelbarrow

Traditional English Pub
When you enter this lovely old building, you have a feeling of having stepped back in time to a gentler era - the dark, timbered walls and bar, button-backed leather Chesterfield sofas - the hallmarks of the quintessential English touch. Decorated with London Tube maps, and other trinketry, offering various Irish, English and Scottish beers, it is one of Melbourne's friendliest pubs.

Sprawling over three levels on the corner of Bourke St. and Exhibition St., the E&W is just the spot for a quiet drink or a night out. There is music most nights, and with a DJ and live music on Saturday nights it gets very lively. With food prices ranging from $15 up and generous servings, you will find that from the backpacker to the well-heeled there is something for everbody. So next time you're in Melbourne pop into the E&W and check it out.

View from Bourke Street. Check out the lead light windows on the ground floor.

Oh, I would visit this place in a heartbeat! Years ago when we lived in Portland, Oregon, one of our favorite places was an English pub, Elephant and Castle! I find all the reflections in your photo as fascinating as the building itself! Super!

Cheryl - There are a number of traditional English pubs here. There a lovely one in Red Hill down on the Mornington Peninsula called the Pig and Whistle. We had lunch there and the food is first rate. We had trifle for dessert and the serving size was so large we couldn't finish it.

It looks lovely even from the outside! I'd probably wait till Saturday to drop in though. ;)

«Louis» has always wanted to visit Australia. Your images make him want to quit thinking about it, get off his bovine butt and actually do it. Then there's the problem of air transport for une vache, but that's only a minor detail....

Looks like my kind of place. I'll put it on my 'must visit' list.

I spent 6 years of my life in London, and your pub reminds me very much of one in... Elephant and Castle, a borough south of the Thames. Talking about silly names... Do you have "have pubs with names like "hung, drawn and quartered", or "the Queen's legs" in Oz?
About my cake. The cakes themselves look very nice in that shop, but their prices are totally absurd. I never bought one, I can only guess it's orange.

It has a special elegance about it...and your description is exquisite, mouth-watering, actually!

Thanks for sharing this!

Hilda - Certainly a 'party' atmospohere.

Sonia - I give you
Bottoms up
Down the hatch
Chinchin

Louis la Vache - PLenty of transport available - we accommodate everybody!

B Squared - You won't be disappointed. Lovely place, Melbourne.

Rob and Mandy, the only unusual pub name I've seen was in Launceston (Tasmania) called "The Cock And Bull."

Jacob - Thanks. It is a very nice old place, full of bonhomie.

Ai Shiang - I initially started this blog to help visitors and tourists visiting Melbourne. Even though visitor information centres are good, I thought it'd be helpful to have something extra as well as the ususal "tourist" information.

JM - They're what's (now) known as "heritage" colours.
