Scenic Sunday - Stopover

A wagon ride?

Gotta dream boy
Gotta song
Paint your wagon
And come along

I spotted this wagon standing forlorn in the grounds of Lovegrove Winery Estate and was reminded of the film "Paint Your Wagon" and thought of the many hundreds of emigrants of an earlier age where horse and wagon was the only means of transport. Looking at these times from the comfort of the 21st century, they bring visions of romance and excitement, of being on the road facing new adventures with new landscapes to see each day.

In reality however, it would have been a long, tiring, often dangerous journey, not knowing when you might meet dangers and pitfalls along the way. Those early emigrants must have been a sturdy lot. I wonder how many of us today would have the strength and stamina to make such a journey?

Today's quote: Hitch your wagon to a star - Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Oh...lovely photo! I too wonder how sturdy our predecessors would have to be. (The horrors of no indoor plumbing alone would be more than I could handle.)

Henry the Octopus is now stuck in my head.

Love the old woods of these wagons! Lots of fresh air to be had as you travel but I wonder about the state of muscles and bones as you bump your way from A to B! Lovely photo!

Lovely scene, well composed. I've just finished reading "Kings in Grass Castles" about the pioneering family, Durack. They traveled from Golburn to outback Queensland on horseback while the women and children were in carts/buggies. Later they went from outback Qld to the Kimberly region. Amazing!

This reminds «Louis» of those who traveled west across the U.S. in the Studebaker Conestoga wagons. We certainly have it easy by comparison - yet «Louis» is often struck by how comparatively less civilized we are in our social mores...

A nice old wagon in a quite realistic setting.

That's a great oldie but goodie! Yes, people used to have it very difficult in terms of traveling...I taught American history and we spent some time on the movement west and the wagon trains. Those were not easy treks.

Not many, I've ridden in wagons (and once on a stagecoach) - even on smooth roads thay are bouncing and jarring. And there were no smooth roads back then! But it's a lovely, peaceful photo. The wagon is parked (and no longer painted) and the leaves on the willow are bright green. Ahh, nice.

Some days I wouldn't mind a wagon. I bet wagon payments are cheaper than car payments. :-)

I think that wagon has either run out of gas or the horses ran away! Great to see your postings again, BFG!
